How to avoid the crowds during cherry blossom season

Sakura season is the busiest time of year in Japan. With a bit of timing you can still enjoy the blossoms in peace.

Tips · 5 min read

Go early

Most famous spots are calm before 8 am. Arashiyama, the Philosopher's path and Chureito pagoda are completely different places at sunrise.

Visit on weekdays

Weekends during full bloom are packed in every big park. Plan your must see spots for Monday to Thursday and use the weekend for day trips further out.

Pick quieter parks

In Tokyo try Koishikawa Korakuen, Rikugien or the Zenpukuji river. In Kyoto, Haradanien, the Kamogawa banks north of Demachiyanagi and the Okazaki canal are calmer than Maruyama park.

Book hotels early

Hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo fill up months ahead for late March and early April. Book refundable rooms as soon as you know your dates.
