Expected 2027 dates

Tokyo: first bloom around March 22, full bloom around March 29.

Kyoto and Osaka: first bloom around March 25, full bloom around April 2.

Hiroshima and Fukuoka: first bloom around March 22 to 25.

Sendai: early to mid April. Hirosaki and Kakunodate: around April 20 to 25.

Sapporo: around early May.

These are averages from recent years, not an official prediction. Recent springs have often bloomed a few days earlier than the long-term mean.

When official forecasts come out

Japanese weather companies publish their first sakura forecasts in January and update them every week or two until the bloom. The Japan Meteorological Agency announces first and full bloom on the day it happens using sample trees in each city.

We update our forecast page as the season approaches, so check back from February onwards.

How to plan around uncertainty

Book flexible hotels and aim for the middle of the expected window. If you can, stay at least five days in one area so you overlap with full bloom even if dates shift.

Have a backup plan: if the city blooms early, head into the mountains or north. If it blooms late, look for early varieties such as Kawazu zakura or weeping cherries.
